Spratling Silver: A Field Guide – Recognizing A William Spratling Treasure

Spratling Silver: A Field Guide Book

Spratling Silver: A Field Guide - Recognizing A William Spratling Treasure, Written by Phyllis M Goddard, Published by Keenan Tyler Paine

This book is written by Phyllis M Goddard, the undisputed expert on William Spratling Silver Jewelry and other items.  She has studied and collected not only Spratling Silver pieces, but more information on the artist than anybody I’ve ever seen.  William Spratling was known as the Father or Mexican Silver.  He was an American expat who inspired the Mexican silver movement that originated in Taxco Mexico, and remains alive today.

There are 3 distinct periods of Spratling designs and each produced its own unique jewelry styles.  The book covers each in detail.  She also shows examples of the different hallmarks he used during his career.   There is a lot of information on how to recognize a Spratling copy, and as with most highly collectible things, there are many.  I don’t own any William Spratling jewelry but I’ve seen some pieces in museums.  There are lots of pictures included in the book and I enjoyed reading about his creative genius.
