“Antique Sweetheart Jewelry” – A Book Review
This book is the second one written by Nicholas D. Snider on the subject of sweetheart jewelry from World War I and World War II. It is a full sized soft cover book published by Schiffer and it includes a price guide in effect as of 1997. With over 200 color photographs of jewelry, compacts, fabric and paper collectibles, the book shows the human side of war via patriotic mementos exchanged by men and women separated by historic events.
Collecting War Sweetheart memorabilia has become very popular and jewelry is a particular favorite. The jewelry related chapters in Snider's book cover bracelets, compacts, earrings, pins, lockets, necklaces and pendants, rings, along with special sections on Wasp (Women's Airforce Service Pilot), and the Seabee (Construction Batallion) items. The main focus relates to American jewelry, and features a few British items as well. The descriptions are concise and easy to read.
I'm not keen on the way the author included chapters on paper and fabric collectibles in a book with a title meant to be about jewelry. The book also covers greeting cards, playing cards, postcards, pillow covers, handkerchiefs, banners, and flags. It seems the title of the book is misleading as to the actual subject matter within the cover. Otherwise, Antique Sweetheart Jewelry is a comprehensive look at military collectibles from American's past and one of just a few books on the subject. Any beginner or serious collector will want this as one of their cornerstone reference books.
