Physical Properties of Amethyst Gemstones

Amethyst is a form of quartz crystal that obtains the purple color from the minerals manganese and iron. It is a hard stone, measuring a 7 on the Moh’s scale. Thus, it’s very durable and easy to set into jewelry. The color range of an amethyst is pale lilac to deep purple, with the darker stones as the most desirable. The stones are sensitive to heat and can turn lighter if left in hot temperatures.  It’s a good idea to keep your amethyst jewelry out of direct sun for extended periods.

Folklore and Legends

Ancient Greeks believed amethyst guarded against drunkenness.  According to the legend there was a young maiden named Amethyst who was en route to visit a goddess named Diana. On the way Dionysus, the God of wine and intoxication, captured her.  He called for two tigers to eat her while he watched and drank wine. Hearing this the goddess Diana used her magic to turn Amethyst into a crystal quartz statue so she couldn't be eaten. Dionysus wept tears of wine upon her, staining her purple.

Mystical Properties of Amethyst

Over the centuries many faiths and beliefs have been associated with the amethyst.  Some believe that amethyst has purifying healing power for the mind body and soul.  It has been used to treat pain and depression, and is associated with peace.  Amethysts are believed to guard against nightmares when placed under a pillow. They also are thought to be a remedy for addiction or alcoholism.  Still others believe it will protect crops, keep safe those at war, and destroy evil spirits.
