July Birthstones – Ruby

For those born in July, your birthstone is a ruby, which is one of the world’s most prized gemstones.  A ruby is also given to commemorate a 40^th anniversary, and the deep red color represents everlasting love.  It is one of the hardest stones with a measure of 9 out of 10 on the Moh’s scale.  Fiery red rubies have been prized for their beauty for at least 2,500 years, when history shows the first ruby mines were developed.  Ruby mines are located throughout the world and the most prized rubies are found in Burma.

The traditional properties for rubies are love, devotion and good health, and they are thought to represent heat and power.  Historically Kings wore rubies to give them power and protect them from evil.

There are dozens of mystical claims about rubies.  In early times the ruby was thought to have magical powers and would guard against evil.  The blood red color was believed to be caused by an internal flame that would burn forever.  Some rubies will turn darker in color and to some that meant danger was imminent, and when the danger passed the ruby was thought to return to its original color.   Some people believed that a pot of water would instantly boil if a ruby was put in, and when ground to a fine powder and placed on one’s tongue it was used to cure indigestion.

One of the most famous rough and unpolished ruby is the Hixon Ruby, which is displayed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. It weighs over 196 carats and has a flawless surface.
