May Birthstones – Emerald
The beautiful green emerald is a traditional birthstone for the month of May. Appropriately so with green being the color of springtime and nature. Emeralds are a form of the mineral beryl which is durable and rare making it a favorite to use in jewelry.
Almost all emeralds have flaws and most commercially sold emeralds have been treated to enhance the clarity of the stones. Some are treated with irradiation, and almost all have been oiled as part of the lapidary process. In order to preserve the oil treatments it's recommended that emerald jewelry not be cleaned with solutions but rather wiped with a soft cloth . Many people however actually prefer the natural beauty of flawed emeralds for their unique appearance and authenticity.
Emeralds are mined in many parts of the world but some of the finest and most prized come from Columbia. Colombian emeralds have a deep green color. Typically the deepest green gems are the most coveted.
Healing and mystical properties of emeralds are good luck, harmony, intelligence, and the ability to predict the future. Maybe that is why the Wizard of Oz lived in the Emerald City?
