Mexican Silver Jewelry
Some of the highest quality and most beautiful jewelry of the 20th century was created in Mexico and the country is still producing exceptional pieces today. The hub of silver jewelry creation in Mexico was in the city of Taxco, where many fine silversmiths fine tuned their craft. Taxco is located between Acapulco and Mexico City, and is home to one of the oldest silver mines in the Americas.
William Spratling, an American who moved to Taxco in the 1920s is generally credited with creating the modern silver jewelry movement in the area. He worked with local silversmiths that had talent and developed a worldwide market for their products. Spratling is known as the "Father of Mexican Silver."
There were several famous silver jewelry designers from Taxco, including Antonio Pineda, Margot de Taxco, Hector Aguilar, and the Castillo brothers. Their pieces are in great demand today. There are many other Mexican silver designers and jewelry from the Taxco area. When buying vintage Mexican jewelry it's a good idea to do a little research to learn about the hallmarks and designers. I use The Little Book Of Mexican Silver Trade And Hallmarks when I'm looking to buy Mexican silver. This book has hundreds of pictures of Mexican hallmarks and so far I have been able to locate every mark I've researched.
Vintage Mexican silver jewelry is becoming very collectible and as a result very pricey. There are some new pieces that are lovely, however in order to get quality silver the new jewelry is likely going to be expensive also. I am investing in just a couple of nice bracelets and pins first and then will expand my collection as I learn more about the genre.
