Mother’s Day Charm Bracelets
Historically in the golden age of charms, around the mid 20th century, women bought charms that commemorated events and special times in their lives and filled up their charm bracelets with their memories. Then at some point they passed their bracelets down to their daughters, who in turn did the same with their daughters.
These days one doesn't hear too much about that old fashioned tradition. But with Mother's Day coming up I was thinking how nice it would be if a similar custom became popular again. How about if moms and daughters started charm bracelets and bought charms as gifts for one another? They could be in honor of special holidays, hobbies, events, and any other special occasion or sentiment.
Mother's day would be a great time to begin a charm exchange. There are so many pretty vintage mother's day charms available at reasonable prices on the internet and antique shows. And if vintage isn't your style, charm bracelets are becoming so popular that companies are again making new quality pieces.
A friend of mine recently began collecting Pandora Charms, which are little beads that slide onto a rope style bracelet. They are so beautiful and there is an amazing selection. I can tell by looking at and touching them that the craftsmanship is amazing. A Pandora store just opened in our local mall so I will likely be checking that out soon. And Tiffany has an ever growing cache of pretty gold and silver charms. Another company that specializes in charms is Rembrandt Charms. They even have an on-line charms collectors club.
Once a collection is started it's hard to ignore the passion for seeking out these miniature magical journeys of one's life. It's a fun and addicting hobby. Here are a few vintage charms to whet your whistle.

I can vouch for how addictive collecting charms is. Like many people I concentrate on a couple of themes to stop myself becoming overwhelmed with the enormous variety of charms there are available.
One of the highlights of my day is having a browse on eBay to see if anything new has come up in one of my vintage sterling silver themes. I’d love to collect more gold charms but can’t really afford them so instead I have the fun of collecting vintage sterling silver where there is such a big range of beautiful charms but at a more affordable price.
That’s the great thing about collecting charms – you can opt in at the level you can afford.
And you don’t always have to be buying to enjoy yourself. Over the weekend I followed the adventures of about a dozen 14k and 18k gold vintage Italian charms on eBay. They were fabulous charms – started at an inviting .99 cents no reserve but obviously were going to go for much more than that.
I knew they were going to be quite out of reach for me but what fun I had watching the bidding, especially the last few minutes as charm lovers desperately tried to get the final winning bid in.
Quite exhausting even though I wasn’t bidding!
